The Center for the Arts is a specialized program for exceptionally talented students to participate in highly specialized courses in the visual arts, drama, music and dance.

Students living in the North Area of Miami-Dade County entering the 6th, 7th or 8th grades are eligible to apply. These students are auditioned, interviewed, and screened by a panel of specialists in each area. If accepted, they will be registered as full-time students at Norland Middle School for the following school year.

The arts program consists of classroom instruction for two hours daily with the remainder of the day being devoted to academic study. Specialized faculty, equipment and facilities are provided for the individual talent areas to maintain a high level of instruction. To remain in the Center for the Arts, students must maintain high levels of academic achievement and demonstrate genuine dedication to the arts.

PLEASE READ DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY

1. Go to the application link at the bottom of this page after you have read all the important information on this page.  Then click on the link so you may apply online OR print out the application and . Please complete all required areas of the application. Failure to complete any area may result in the application not being processed.

2. All applications will be processed by Schools Choice & Parental Options. Please email or send your applications directly to the office as listed below. PLEASE NOTE: You MUST use this year's application form to apply. Forms from previous years will NOT be processed.

3. Schools of Choice & Parental Options will only process the official Magnet Application Form. Any documents, transcripts, recommendation forms, etc., required by individual schools to which you are applying, MUST be sent directly to the attention of the Magnet Lead Teacher at the individual schools to which you are applying. Items other than the official Magnet Application Form sent to School Choice & Parental Options will be discarded.

4. Individual schools such as Norland Middle School, may require recommendation forms or other documentation. You must contact the individual schools to which you are applying to secure those forms. All required recommendation forms must be sent directly to the school to which you are applying.

5. In order to be considered for Sibling status, you must provide the correct Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Student Identification Number for both the applicant and applicant’s sibling(s). The applicant’s sibling must be attending the same magnet school for the upcoming school year and the sibling must reside in the same household as the student who is applying, or documentation of joint custody must be provided.

6. If your child does not already have a Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Student Identification Number, you should contact the school your child would attend in his/her designated attendance boundary and request a temporary Student Identification Number prior to submitting this application. If the school is unable to provide a temporary identification number, or if you are presently residing outside of Miami-Dade County, please type or print NO ID on the application in the area labeled M-DCPS Student ID Number.

Applicants also need to do the following when applying to the Center for the Arts at Norland Middle School. Go to the application link on the magnet main page and print out the teacher recommendation form for the strand you are interested in. Please read the entire teacher recommendation form carefully. Take the form to your teacher at the school you are attending now and have them fill out the teacher recommendation part of the form. Then submit the completed teacher recommendation form with report card attached no later than January 31, 2012 to Norland Middle School.  Auditions are by appointment only and will be scheduled for applicants who have submitted completed applications to the School of Choice Office and the teacher recommendation form to Norland Middle School by January 31, 2012. Auditions will be conducted on the following dates: 

Saturday, February 11, 2012    9 am to 4 pm

If needed, another date with be scheduled.  When all slots are filled for the incoming school year,  the auditions will be closed. It is recommended that you adhere to the audition requirements and date to ensure your best chance into the magnet program for the next school year.

You will be notified by mail of your child's time and date of their audition. If we have not notified you of your appointments by January 31, 2012, please call the Magnet Office at (305) 653-1210 EX. 2212 for information regarding audition.

The audition will be held at Norland Middle School.
